What Is an Essay?
At once a very personal and a very social form of writing, the essay is appealing because of its ability to bring a writer and readers together in a feeling of shared experience. The word “essay” comes from the French word meaning “attempt” or “effort”—writing an essay is a way of inviting readers to participate in your thought process and to follow along while an interesting idea is being worked out.
Essays come in a variety of types, but each expresses the unique opinion, and even the personality, of the writer who pens it. In addition, all essays should ideally be:
- Concise
- Casual or conversational in tone
- Focused on one main point
- Persuasive
