Recommended Dosage
Zolpidem comes as a tablet. Although the dosages given below are typical, only your health-care practitioner can determine the dose and schedule that best fit your needs.
- Children: Zolpidem is not recommended for children.
- Adults: Immediate-release, 5 to 10 mg at bedtime; controlled-release, 6.25 to 12.5 mg at bedtime
Zolpidem should be taken on an empty stomach. If you forget a dose, skip it and resume your normal schedule. Never take a double dose. If you have been taking zolpidem for a few weeks, do not stop taking it suddenly. Abrupt withdrawal can lead to sleep disturbances and anxiety. Speak to your health-care practitioner about gradually reducing dosage. You may experience sleeping difficulties the first night or two after stopping this medication (“rebound insomnia”).
Symptoms of Overdose and What to Do
Symptoms of zolpidem overdose may include sleepiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, troubled breathing, lethargy, and coma. If overdose occurs, seek immediate medical attention and take the prescription bottle to the hospital with you.
